Just finished praising the vertical, and now I have to contradict myself (and I do so with pleasure) by casting a large fishing lure to win the forgiveness of the Recumbent: fantasy, technology, modernity (squared), sustainability. A futuristic complex designed as a capital ’C" city, where living and working are in osmosis with nature, historical vestiges, the great present, and the Promethean imagination of the future. Without muddling things, naturally, with clarity and distinction (Cartesian style), giving each thing its due, because without the past, there is no present, but without the future, there is nothing, only decay, economic and intellectual misery, and then an infinite agony of failures and funeral laments. We are at Parco Lambro, we are in Leonardo's vicinity, who, perhaps, is turning up his nose a little at us, for being too timid, fearful, awkward, confusing Tradition with Traditionalism.
The first is boldness, planning, originality. The second is sad repetition, penmanship without fountain pen.
To be with Filarete means to be with Yuki Ikeguchi and all those who, like him (I include myself), are not fearful of the Tower of Babel or Labyrinth syndrome, but accept the challenge and broaden their horizons, taking flight and travelling on foot or by bicycle, without consuming precious land, but by merging nature and culture, creating a blend of a thousand values, a thousand languages, without forgetting their own. It means calling Sforzinda to conciliation, the masters of Sabbioneta, Pienza and Mesola, not so much to receive their blessing or encouragement, but to steal from them the enigmatic sign of the unknown, to be known and loved.
