The fabulist recounts: in a time long ago, when Zeus of Olympus ruled the heavens, an assembly of delegates from all the doves in the world took place among the branches of a great wood; the doves, who are generally peaceful and gave Picasso the occasion to make them a symbol, which reigned throughout the last century (and still cut a fine figure today), were angry with the air in the sky, because it prevented
their free movements and their dances, their barrel rolls and nosedives and (to hear their agitated opinions) made them clumsy, awkward.
And so, no sooner said than done, they asked Zeus to abolish the air and thus allow a great festival of freedom and creativity, but when they tried to fly, finally free, they realised that what prevented their whims in the sky was also their means and tool, necessary for flight: so everyone was back on the ground… and that was that!
The chronicler recounts. Somewhat astonished, confused, bewildered, that the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (the one in Ripetta) has abolished the Free School of the Nude, a historic and noble institution, to save a few euros, with the laughable reason of having few students enrolled in the courses.
Well done, very well done, all of you, for economism or for idleness, you have wanted to cancel one of the excellent and Renaissance things of our artistic education, considering it useless, outdated.
Thus, a fundamental institution, which has seen a succession of great masters and students, is fading away, in what must continue to be one of the most prestigious hallmarks of Italian style, which must be restored immediately with a reparative act that mends this unjust wound.
The descriptive or disqualifying adjectives with which one could, should, can, must judge this nefarious situation are innumerable and necessary.
In the meantime, I hope no other Academy follows this example, which harms everything and everyone, fine arts and visual arts (thus we understand the detractors and the integrated, of the old – actually ancient – and the new – actually necessary – even if here very misunderstood and misinterpreted. I hope, I promise, I swear, they want the infinite future, but events happen in the present, which is why I say forcefully, long live today, the Free School of the Nude in Rome, with Scipione, Mafai, Boccioni and many other immortals, who are turning over and shouting with us.
