It's a compliment, I don't want to deny it. And on the other hand, as they say, when it's necessary, one shouldn't back down. I've been reviewing Roman exhibitions at the Gagosian Gallery for years, and I do so with joy and satisfaction, because of the fruitfulness of the choices, because of the rigour of the installations, which create culture in the full sense of the word, which create style, something that in these times, and has been for a long time, is lacking or absent altogether.
This is, as everyone knows, a chain of galleries that encircle the world, one might say, and they do so without emphasis or media over-abundance, but rather with sobriety and the capacity to Show, a plurality of choices, which do not follow singular directions, but an eclectic quality, which is accompanied by a freedom that is not without codes, but is capable of interpreting and transforming them, with grace and decisiveness. You will say that the two terms are contradictory; well, yes, they are, but the first line of art must possess them, and this one does.
The magazine “Gagosian,” a quarterly of refined design and always sensible content, without exaltation or excessive praise, but also without false modesty, with due consideration for proportions and variations, of the art system and the art market, whereby Twombly, Koons, Setsuko, stand alongside young artists, promises or established figures, which give an idea (among the many desirable ones) of the future, necessary, indispensable, for the present to continue history... Returning to the Roman gallery, I cannot fail to reiterate how beneficial it is for everyone (those who converge and those who compete...) and for the City, which at this moment, feels on its skin a decline in importance, with few sparks of true biographical vitality, not to be confused with pre-intellectual and pre-aesthetic biological vitalism. System means richness, diversity, freedom. Here be lions.!!!
