The Portuguese brand's second collection Made in situ, Conceived by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, it uses a material that might seem unusable to most, cork that was burnt during the fires that devastated Portugal in 2017, thereby transforming it into a new collection of furnishings.
The idea of transforming waste into an opportunity came to the French designer upon his move to the Lusophone country: “The challenge for this collection was to extract beauty from a dramatic experience. The Burnt Cork collection was born from the ashes; I wanted to express this tension in the design, and that’s how the idea of creating custom blocks that reveal a gradient from raw burnt cork to a refined finish emerged,” he recounts in interviews.
After complex experimentation lasting two years, the pieces are the result of a supply chain that combines artisanal and industrial processing.
Hand-assembled in a series of blocks by Granorte, a small family-run specialist company, the cork mass was carved by the industrial robots of NF Cork following Duchaufour-Lawrance's designs. Thus, through subtraction from this recycled material, monobloc chairs, tables and stools are created, enhancing their sculptural nature through the fluidity of their lines and successfully integrating the effects of fire-related scorching.
