The city, as the very etymon of civilisation, in the sense of order, organisation, verticality, and transversality, is increasingly subjected to multiple stresses, from its material structures for housing, recreation, and production, which are leading to a progressive, unbounded extension of its area, where the new, the technological, and the innovative intersect with decay and abandonment. This creates, on the one hand, a 'doughnut effect' whereby centres are increasingly bureaucracy without anthropology, while peripheries are essentially untamed anthropology, lacking services and amenities. Destructive examples can be cited. for abundance, In historical and modern cities, in mountain villages and industrial districts, as well as, also, of constructive examples; but nothing organic, nothing that can be defined as a functional method for diverse realities. From time to time, successes or failures are recorded, in a general climate where abandonment and decay prevail, in contrast to a few significant and winning ventures.
By chance, I stumbled upon a lengthy report about a project concerning the former (but not entirely so) Italian-Chinese district of Prato. In this area, from the eighties to the noughties, textile sheds and residential density proliferated, leading to various problems, a tangle of disused sites and impossible projects. Finally, however, there's a glimmer of hope, with residential areas, public spaces, and social interaction, topped by a Air Factory one Media Library and a Prism, As flywheels, to remediate, re-grade, connect, replicate, with a holistic modality, capable of making entire connections of the once-unified Arts of the Trivium and Quadrivium, with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) and the Big Five (Paleoanthropology, Anthropology, Psychology, Evolutionary Biology, Neurobiology) – hand skills and qualities of today, within the multicultural context that is quintessentially Italian, second only to Paris and London, with scientific rigour and humanity, undertaking high-level strategic planning, but also gathering the will of the community!
