We have a bridge. We can say it. We can shout it. It's finally the right time to move from words to deeds and start the bridge that will connect the largest region in Italy to the peninsula and the European continent, breaking an isolation that does no good to anyone. It will interrupt a road, rail, and hopefully also pedestrian connection that only pleases lazy lovers of small things, not to mention that it is large structures that make a nation great. The people of architects, engineers, builders, carpenters, and companies capable of doing a major part of the doubling of the Panama Canal, in that of Suez, of building the San Giorgio Bridge of Genoa in one year, cannot assert their quality, their style, in our own country. I've been hearing about the story of the bridge since the seventies, when people thundered against the Autostrada del Sole (which they said would be useless...) and then each time, with one excuse or another, there was a stop, until not only projects and contracts were almost cancelled, but also the very idea of the Bridge itself.
The “do-gooders” and the "over-do-gooders" used to say that there were other things to be done, that there was more to be done, meaning minor repairs, maintenance, and the "usual" hospitals and nurseries, not to mention that we are a great country, industrial, agricultural, technological, poetic, artistic, that cannot and must not stop being Leonardo to become Parmigiano Reggiano, that we must be both. Let us remember the great Roman aqueducts, the Colosseum, St. Peter's Dome; this is what makes our history, a great history, of proud primacy, ready to compete with the primacy of other countries, in a competition of geniuses and marvels. I once said in a lecture that without a Bernini, Serpotta and Gagini would not be born. I will call Bernini, the bridge.
