The work
In the Silver version, Balloon Dog takes on a more essential and contemporary character. The silver finish ideally evokes the metallic and reflective surface of the monumental sculptures created by Koons, accentuating the relationship with design, industrial objects, and the aesthetics of perfection. The simple and immediate shape thus acquires an almost sculptural and monumental presence despite its contained dimensions.
As in the original work, the contrast between the apparent fragility of the balloon and the solidity of the sculpture becomes one of the central elements of the composition. The subject alludes to childhood and celebration, but its vivid and precious rendering places it in a completely different dimension, where art, pop culture, and collectible objects come together. The After version by Editions Studio interprets this iconic image through cold-cast resin and a highly reflective silver finish.
Balloon Dog is one of the most emblematic images of Jeff Koons’s work and was created as part of the Celebration series, which the artist began in the 1990s. The simple balloon, shaped like a dog and associated with parties and childhood, is transformed by Koons into a monumental and permanent sculpture. The original work, created between 1994 and 2000 in mirror-polished stainless steel, reproduces with extreme precision the apparent lightness of an ephemeral object, giving it, in contrast, a solid and lasting presence.
This tension between simplicity and complexity, playfulness and monumentality, popular culture and art history is central to Koons’s poetics. The reflective surface reflects the environment and the viewer, making the Balloon Dog part of the work and transforming it into an image in constant dialogue with its observer. The After edition by Editions Studio takes this iconic form in a more accessible dimension, while maintaining the playful, bright and immediately recognizable character of Koons’s sculpture.
The artist
Jeff Koons
Jeff Koons was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1955. After studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he moved to New York, where he developed a research deeply linked to popular culture, consumption, and the relationship between art and the market. Starting in the 1980s, he established himself on the international scene through works that reinterpret everyday objects, images from mass culture, and icons of contemporary society, transforming them into sculptures and images with a strong theatrical component. His poetics is based on the ability to bring together high art and popular culture, using visual seduction, technical perfection, and the aesthetics of the commercial object as research tools. His works address themes such as desire, consumption, childhood, pleasure, and the relationship between the individual and society, often through seemingly simple and familiar subjects. Among his most famous works are Rabbit, Puppy and the Balloon Dog series, which are now part of the collections of important international institutions.
