The work
In Flâneur, Meriem Delacroix translates the sensory experience associated with the act of walking and observing into painting, transforming the lived experience of a walk into an abstract and immersive composition. Created in 2023 in mixed media on canvas, the work arises from the interplay between perception, movement, and memory, returning not the literal representation of a place but the emotional and multisensory trace that that experience leaves in the artist.
The title evokes the figure of the flâneur, one who navigates the urban space guided by the stimuli of the environment. It is a concept particularly close to Delacroix’s research, based on synesthesia, that is, the contamination between the different senses: sounds, smells, colors, emotions, and physical sensations can translate into forms and colors on the canvas. Flâneur thus becomes a representation not so much of what the eye sees, but of what the body and perception register during the experience, inviting the viewer to confront an image that is free and deeply subjective of reality.
The artist
Meriem Delacroix
Meriem was born in 1988 in a Parisian family and at the age of nineteen she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, refining her creative skills and shaping her unique artistic vision. At the age of 26 she was told that she suffered from synesthesia, a neurological condition in which the senses interfere with each other, giving color to scents, flavor to landscapes, or sound to inanimate objects. Previously convinced that everyone lived the world the same way as she did, Meriem found her creative path in the realm of abstract art. After learning the art of portraiture and copper engraving, she decided to express her synesthetic experiences on canvas, with the aim of inviting others into her multisensory world. Her abstract creations are more than just paintings: they are visual concerts, aromatic landscapes, tactile symphonies that transcend the traditional boundaries of sensory perception. Meriem is particularly drawn to the vivid images evoked by music, strong emotions, sounds, and touch, which she vividly conveys in her works. Her unique and original artistic creations have been featured in numerous exhibitions, from the Milan Biennale to the galleries in Venice and Paris. The artist is also deeply committed to using her art to give back to the community by participating in numerous charity events. In 2021, for example, she collaborated with Emergency by exhibiting her paintings in Venice to support this humanitarian cause.
