The work
In Afrodite Cnidia, Giorgio Tentolini reinterprets one of the most famous images of the Western sculptural tradition through his characteristic language of subtraction, layering and transparency. The classical figure of Afrodite gradually emerges from the surface, as an apparition suspended between presence and dissolution, giving the viewer the impression of observing not so much a sculpture as the memory of an image.
The work presents itself as a kind of three-dimensional cube, conceived to freely interact with the space: it can be placed on a wall or displayed on a support surface. This dual possibility of use reinforces the contemporary nature of Tentolini’s research, allowing the work to be viewed from different perspectives and placed in different exhibition contexts.
The reference to the famous Aphrodite Cnidia introduces the theme of the memory of art and the permanence of images over time into the artist’s contemporary research. The goddess’s body, stripped of its original consistency and reconstructed through lightweight and overlapping materials, appears fragmented yet recognizable at the same time, in a delicate balance between the visible and the invisible, matter and emptiness. The light permeates and shapes the layers of the work, continuously modifying its perception and bringing to light details that seem to appear and disappear in space.
Tentolini thus transforms an icon of classicism into a contemporary and rarefied image, questioning the relationship between individual memory, collective imagination, and art history. The figure of Aphrodite becomes a silent, almost incorporeal presence in which classical beauty is reinterpreted through the fragility and transience of the image. The three-dimensional structure amplifies this sense of suspension, allowing the work to be in constant dialogue with the light and the surrounding space.
The artist
Giorgio Tentolini
Giorgio Tentolini was born in Casalmaggiore (Cremona) in 1978, where he lives and works. Each of his works emerges from a precise investigation into time as memory and identity, through careful study and a slow reconstruction involving the light and the etching of layers of different materials, such as fabrics, cards, and PVC. Currently, he favors tulle and metal mesh as the primary media of his research, for the meditative lightness these materials confer on the image, offering a metaphor of places, memories, dreams, and visions. His work, a cross between painting and sculpture, has received national and international recognition since the early 2000s. His works have been exhibited in prestigious venues in Europe, including Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Geneva, as well as in the United States and Taiwan, including public spaces of great importance such as the Italian Cultural Institute in Athens, the Etruscan Museum in Rome, the Royal Palace in Milan, the Regio Theatre in Parma, the MAR - Museum of Art of the City of Ravenna, the MUSA - Museum of Art of the City of Salò, the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia Romagna Region and the Council of the Lombardy Region in the Pirelli skyscraper in Milan. With great enthusiasm, he participates in the sixty-first edition of the Venice Biennale, hosted in the pavilion of Cameroon at the prestigious rooms of Palazzo Donà Dalle Rose. His project explores the roots of humanity, offering a deep and reflective look at human history and identity.
