The work
Among the first works in De Luca’s figurative production, Osteria del Porticato returns a collected and highly atmospheric image of everyday Bologna, filtered through a painterly sensibility still tied to the tradition of representation. The title evokes the world of the ancient Bologna osterie, places of encounter and popular life, which can be traced back to that urban dimension characterized by porticoes, intimate interiors, and the intimate atmospheres that characterize the artist’s city.
The particularly dark tone of the work accentuates the silent and meditative character of the scene, transforming the simple surroundings of the inn into a space almost suspended in time. The subdued light and the predominance of dark colors contribute to creating a dense atmosphere in which the elements of everyday reality seem to lose their immediacy to assume a more evocative value.
In this early phase of his research, a comparison emerges with Giorgio Morandi’s teaching, especially in his ability to observe the ordinary world through a painting that is essential, focused on form, light, matter and atmosphere. De Luca does not, however, limit himself to reproducing Morandi’s language; he interprets it through a personal and contemporary sensibility, transferring the same attention to the everyday within an environment deeply linked to his own city. Osteria del Porticato thus becomes not only a representation of a place, but a testimony to a more intimate and collected Bologna, transformed by painting into memory, atmosphere and narrative.
The artist
Andrea De Luca
Painter, sculptor and musician, Andrea De Luca was born in Bologna in 1964. He shares the dynamism and generational energy of the 1980s, translating the suggestions of his reference reality into creative impulse. Alongside the punk phenomenon, he founded the band ‘Radio City“ with his brother Enrico and participated in the first biennial in Thessaloniki with the album ”Sobborghi“. In those years, in addition to his songwriting and painting activities, he attended the studio of the painter Tonino Gottarelli in Imola, his mentor. He has been a trainer for years at an organization that prepares young people of various nationalities and social backgrounds for work.
